Costa Rica (rare) south to Bolivia (transandean) and the western Amazon basin. Flies in rain forest valleys generally. Highly variable, mimicing local Ithomiid models. Several of its "subspecies" are variously treated as full species ( ascolius, neyi, bacchus in particular.) Perhaps the best way to view this group is as the "zagreus complex." Generally not common, and many subspecies are considered rather rare and local.
