Widespread and common from S. India through SE Asia and north even to southern Japan; the Philippines, south and east to Sumbawa and Borneo. Very seasonal, but usually abundant when found in many places during the early dry season (Tsukada). Prefers lowland areas to more montane habitats. Subspecies include:
